Excellent, guide. Dave. The three articles in this series probably saved me a week's worth of work. Unfortunately, I'm jammed on this one. I'm using CentOS 5.6 on ESX/vSphere 4.0u1. vmlinuz and the initrd load and run fine, but the networking fails and can't see the URL for the kickstart file. I've duplicated your steps here (using the 5.6 kernel and kernel modules) using the files from VMware's OSP packages. The only thing missing is the modules.alias step; on my reference system, there are no vmxnet entries in that file (adding them in manually means the installer does not load any ethernet modules and squawks for a driver disk).

If I have to, I'll roll back to 5.5 and just handle 5.6 as a post-install upgrade, but I'd rather not have to. Have you had any luck getting this method to work with 5.6 or are you still version locked to 5.5?

Thank you for this simple, well-documented guide to enabling netboot on vmxnet3 devices. We also were netbooting with e1000 NICs and having to switch back. What a pain.
